Queens Taekwon-do Center (QTC) is located in the north of the American continent, specifically in the USA, in the city of New York, in the county of Queens, at the following address: 89 -18 Roosevelt Ave. Jackson Heights, NY 11372.

QTC is part of the National Taekwon-do Association-ITF (NTA-ITF), an allied organization of the ITF in the USA, it was created in August 2012 and has the affiliation of 30 schools around the country.

Make a Difference

In our area there is a lot of diversity in terms of the offer of activities and sports aimed, above all, at the child population. This gives both children and their parents a wide range of options to choose from and forces us to rise to the occasion so that they choose us.

Therefore, the great difference that we make in our Taekwon-Do school aimed at juniors lies in the emphasis with which we teach the principles of TKD and work on values, which in our current world have been almost completely lost. Of course, this is not separate from the training in the physical and technical part that helps us develop the TKD.

At our Center, we believe that these contributions of basic values will better prepare the little ones and will also change our generation, resulting in a better world.

And in that sense, we believe that parents should also be helped.

The work is hard and unfortunately we do not have support from the government or private companies. However, we consider that it is not necessary, since in this way the economic effort we make as individuals is more valued.

From experience, the vast majority do not appreciate things when they are free.

The family is first

If we talk about the beginnings, I must say that this part of the story is quite extensive, but it is worth making a summary of the history of QTC.

While many schools start well planned, with a good budget and a very good organization, QTC was born only with the desire to promote TKD, with the dream of an instructor and without working capital.

This happened on March 1, 1992 when Master William Perlaza (who is currently one of the USA coaches and who will be present at the next world championship to be held in Ireland) and Isabel Gutiérrez, made the initial contribution for this “ madness” that would not be easy.

And it really wasn't easy, since the fact of being in another country, not mastering the language and the sudden change in routine, at a certain moment made me think about returning to my native country, Colombia.

But my mother-in-law Ruth, the mother of Gloria, my wife, convinced me to come to New York because it was the closest thing to my hometown (Cali) and here, I was also going to have the advantage that in the Latin area I could communicate in Spanish, which made me feel more secure.

However, the most important thing my mother-in-law made me realize was that if I went back to my country, I would probably never see my two older daughters and my newborn Stephanie again. This was what made me reconsider and for which I am eternally grateful from the soul.

Seeing my children grow up, imparting our culture and Taekwon-Do to them was and continues to be the most important thing in my life.

That sense of family that Taekwon-Do provides has made me grow as a human being.

Everyone in my family is a TKD practitioner. My wife is VI dan, Claudia is IV dan, Lorena and Stephanie are III, and Ruben Jr. is a Red Belt.

A place in the Big Apple

QTC began operating one block away from where it is currently located. It was a small basement where, together with my daughters Claudia and Lorena and some students who had already trained with me in Colombia and were now in New York, such as Gustavo Naranjo, Black Belt VI dan; who still trains with me and is also a black belt in Jiu-Jitsu, and Juan Carlos León, who accompanied me for many years, we met every day to practice together with Master Perlaza, eternal companion.

That small group started this illusion.

In this way, with the passing of days, making exhibitions in the street, distributing publicity and making contact with friends, the first students arrived at our school. So much so, that in a year we had to change the premises because the space began to be smaller and inappropriate.

So, we moved to another building to a room that was much bigger than the previous one, it was about 2500 square feet and it was also a basement, which made us live another odyssey.

We stayed there for 16 years until one day, the city of New York decided to close all the businesses that were in the basements.

Of course it was like a bucket of cold water for me.

On that same date I had invited Master Kurt Ottesen to teach an arbitration seminar at the school and the surprise was that he literally had no school.

God exists and fortunately a student provided me with the space for the seminar. He was the owner of the building and he provided me with a place located on the first floor, which is the same place where we are today.

As an anecdote and to highlight, upon seeing the situation, Master Ottesen put on his work clothes and also began to demolish and refurbish what would become the QTC. Not many do this, so thank you always, Master Ottesen.

And the reward came.

In the competitive part we have achieved many titles worldwide.

The first was Danny Perlaza who won a gold medal at the junior world championships in Italy in 2004. He started the achievements and international recognition of athletes such as Adriana Moncada, Julio Carlos, Stephanie Suárez, Emanuel Carlos, Kiabeth Jiménez, Linda Camacho and Michelle Muriel, Stephanie Romero, and Dennys Kolenovic.

More than 3,000 students have passed through our school since its inception. And currently two classes are taught for adults and 4 for children from Monday to Friday and on Saturday and Sunday, we have another group that can only attend classes on weekends.

We have carried out different national, regional, and international events; among them, the main ones were:

1. XXIV ITF NY Taekwon-do Tournament

2. 4 International Instructor Courses (IIC)

3. 2 international courses for Referees (IUC)

4. 1 international course for the education of children (IKC)

5. Regional combat and figures seminars.

And we continue walking “Pa’delante”. Our students have followed the example and have opened several schools in the USA.

New events are yet to come, because a better and more peaceful world is possible and if it is through the path of Taekwon-Do, even better.

Marcar la diferencia

En nuestra área existe mucha diversidad en cuanto a la oferta de actividades y deportes dirigidos, sobre todo, a la población infantil. Ello brinda tanto a los niños como a sus padres una amplia gama de opciones para escoger y nos obliga a estar a la altura de las circunstancias para que nos elijan.

Por ello, la gran diferencia que marcamos en nuestra escuela de Taekwon-Do dirigida a juniors, radica en el énfasis con el que enseñamos los principios del TKD y trabajamos sobre valores, los que en nuestro mundo actual se han perdido casi por completo. Por supuesto, esto no está separado del entrenamiento en la parte física y técnica que nos ayuda a desarrollar el TKD.

En nuestro Centro, creemos que estos aportes de valores básicos prepararán mejor a los pequeños y también harán cambiar a nuestra generación, dando como resultado un mundo mejor.

Y en ese sentido, consideramos que hay que ayudar también a los padres.

El trabajo es arduo y desafortunadamente no tenemos apoyo del gobierno o de empresas privadas. Sin embargo, consideramos que no es necesario, puesto que así se valora más el esfuerzo económico que hacemos como individuos.

Por experiencia, la gran mayoría no aprecia las cosas cuando las mismas son gratis.

Lo primero es la familia

Si hablamos de los comienzos, debo decir que esta parte del relato es bastante extensa, pero vale la pena hacer un resumen de la historia de QTC.

Mientras muchas escuelas empiezan bien planificadas, con un buen presupuesto y una muy buena organización, QTC nació sólo con las ganas de promover el TKD, con el sueño de un instructor y sin capital de trabajo.

Ello ocurrió el 01de marzo de 1992 cuando el Maestro William Perlaza (quien actualmente es uno de los entrenadores de USA y que estará presente en el próximo campeonato del mundo a llevarse a cabo en Irlanda) e Isabel Gutiérrez, realizaron el aporte inicial para esta “locura” que no sería nada fácil.

Y verdaderamente no fue fácil, ya que el hecho de estar en otro país, no dominar el idioma y el cambio brusco de rutina, en un determinado momento me hicieron pensar en regresar a mi país natal, Colombia.

Pero mi suegra Ruth, la mamá de Gloria, mi esposa, me convenció para que viniera a New York porque era lo más parecido a mi ciudad natal (Cali) y aquí, también iba a contar con la ventaja de que en el área latina podía comunicarme en español, lo que me hizo sentir con mayor seguridad.

Sin embargo, lo más importante que me hizo ver mi suegra fue que si regresaba a mi país, probablemente no volvería a ver mis dos hijas mayores y a mi recién nacida Stephanie. Esto fue lo que me hizo recapacitar y por lo cual le estoy eternamente agradecido desde el alma.

Ver crecer a los hijos, impartirles nuestra cultura y el Taekwon-Do fue y sigue siendo lo más importante en mi vida.

Ese sentido de familia que brinda el Taekwon-Do me ha hecho crecer como ser humano.

Todos en mi familia son practicantes de TKD. Mi esposa es VI dan, Claudia es IV dan, Lorena y Stephanie son III y Ruben Jr. es cinturón Rojo.

Un lugar en la Gran Manzana

QTC empezó a funcionar a una cuadra de distancia de donde está actualmente ubicado. Fue un pequeño sótano donde junto con mis hijas Claudia y Lorena y algunos estudiantes que ya habían entrenado conmigo en Colombia y ahora estaban en Nueva York, como Gustavo Naranjo, Cinturon Negro VI dan; quien aún entrena conmigo y también es cinturón negro en Jiu – Jitsu, y Juan Carlos León, quien me acompañó por muchos años, nos reuníamos todos los días a practicar también junto con el Maestro Perlaza, eterno compañero.

Ese pequeño grupo dio comienzo a esta ilusión.

De esa manera, con el paso de los días, realizando exhibiciones en la calle, repartiendo publicidad y haciendo contacto con amigos, fueron llegando los primeros estudiantes a nuestra escuela. Tanto fue así, que en un año tuvimos que cambiar de local debido a el espacio empezó a resultar cada vez más pequeño e inapropiado.

Así, nos trasladamos a otro edificio a un ambiente que era mucho más grande que el anterior, tenía unos 2500 pies cuadrados y también era un sótano, lo que hizo que viviéramos otra odisea.

Ahí nos mantuvimos por espacio de 16 años hasta que un día, la ciudad de New York decidió cerrar todos los negocios que estuvieran en los sótanos.

Por supuesto que fue como un balde de agua fría para mí.

En esa misma fecha yo había invitado al Maestro Kurt Ottesen para que impartiera un seminario de arbitraje en la escuela y la sorpresa fue que literalmente estaba sin escuela.

Dios existe y afortunadamente un estudiante me facilitó el espacio para el seminario. Era el dueño del edificio y me facilitó un local ubicado en el primer piso, que es el mismo lugar en donde estamos actualmente.

Como anécdota y para destacar, al ver la situación, el Maestro Ottesen se puso la ropa de trabajo y empezó él también a demoler y a acondicionar lo que sería el QTC. No muchos hacen esto, por eso, siempre gracias, Maestro Ottesen.

Y la recompensa llegó

En la parte competitiva hemos logrado muchos títulos a nivel mundial.

El primero fue Danny Perlaza que ganó medalla de oro en el mundial juvenil en Italia 2004. Él dio inicio a los logros y al reconocimiento internacional de atletas como Adriana Moncada, Julio Carlos, Stephanie Suárez, Emanuel Carlos, Kiabeth Jiménez, Linda Camacho y Michelle Muriel, Stephanie Romero y Dennys Kolenovic.

Por nuestra escuela han pasado más de 3000 estudiantes desde su inicio. Y actualmente se imparten dos clases para adultos y 4 para niños de lunes a viernes y los días sábado y domingo, contamos con otro grupo que sólo puede asistir a clases los fines de semana.

Hemos realizado diferentes eventos tanto nacionales, regionales como internacionales, entre ellos, los principales fueron:

1 curso internacional para la educación de Niños (IKC)
Seminarios regionales de combate y figuras.

Y seguimos caminando “Pa’delante”. Nuestros alumnos han seguido el ejemplo y han abierto varias escuelas en USA.

Nuevos eventos están por llegar, porque un mundo mejor y más pacífico es posible y si es por el camino del Taekwon-Do, mejor.
